Body found in Santa Cruz Mountains ID'd
33-year-old woman reported missing in 2007
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department has identified 33-year-old Chiquita Ford of Oakland as the woman whose remains were found March 7 in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos. The investigation, it turned out, hinged on a sweatshirt. Ford, reported missing by Oakland police in October 2007, was found wearing a "hoodie" that went into production in mid-2007 and is no longer made - a dark-colored Coogi hooded sweatshirt.
"Not only did it narrow down the time frame," Sheriff's Sgt. Don Morrissey said Friday, "but it was helpful with some relatives' memories in identifying her."
Morrissey said sheriff's detectives "are still actively investigating" Ford's death, which will remain classified as a homicide.
A man collecting cans for recycling stumbled across the bones. The remains were about 50 yards down a steep slope near Beardsley Road in a canyon that drains into the small portion of Lexington Reservoir west of Highway 17.
Anyone with information about the investigation can contact detectives Herman Leon or Dean Baker at 408-808-4500.
