Stanford, UC plan joint stem cell research project
The Stanford University School of Medicine and UC-Berkeley are joining to conduct stem cell research aimed at finding therapies for a host of diseases. The new Siebel Stem Cell Institute, funded by a $9 million gift from the Thomas and Stacey Siebel Foundation, will bring together scientists, biologists, chemists and engineers from both campuses.
The goal is to advance research to new levels and attract scholars from around the world.
An additional $1.5 million gift from the Siebel Foundation, which will be matched by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, will establish at UC Berkeley the Thomas and Stacey Siebel distinguished chair in stem cell research. That brings the gift total for this initiative to $12 million.
The new institute is being formed by the Berkeley Stem Cell Center and the Stanford Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Institute.
