City to fill vacant seat on rent board
The Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board is looking to fill the seat recently vacated by embattled former board member Chris Kavanagh.Early this month, Kavanagh resigned from the board that he had served on since 2002. Last week he pleaded no contest to one felony count of falsely registering an ineligible voter, namely himself.
In return, Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Trevor White dropped five other felony counts against him, including voter fraud, filing false nominating papers, perjury, grand theft and fraudulently voting.
An investigation by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office concluded that his primary residence is on 63rd Street in Oakland, not the address on Dwight Way in Berkeley that he listed when he ran for office and voted. Kavanagh is scheduled to be sentenced on April 24.
On Wednesday, the city of Berkeley announced it is accepting applications to fill the seat on an interim basis through Nov. 30. Applicants must be a resident of the city and be a registered voter.
The board has established an ad hoc search committee to review applications, which might include phone and personal interviews.
The rent board oversees programs that regulate residential rent to protect tenants from unwarranted rent hikes and arbitrary, discriminatory or retaliatory evictions. It also helps maintain the diversity of Berkeley and ensure compliance with legal obligations related to rental housing.
To apply for the position, submit a letter detailing your background and why you want to serve on the board. Applications must include the person's legal name, address (a post office box will not be accepted) and contact telephone numbers.
Applicants who want their applications to be reviewed by the ad hoc committee need to submit them by March 10. The final deadline for applications is March 17. Applications may be dropped off or mailed to Jay Kelekian, the Rent Board offices, 2125 Milvia St., Berkeley, CA 94704.
For more information, call Kelekian at 510-981-7368.
